How To Disable Internet Connection In Windows XP, 7, 8, 8.1, 10. Disconnect Internet Temporarily


Note: Please do not use more than one network connection at one time.
I will divide disconnecting of the internet in following two cases:
  1. Disconnecting through hardware.
  2. Disconnecting through OS/software.
Case 1: Disconnecting through hardware:
  • If you want to disconnect your Ethernet connection (connection through a wire), then simply unplug the cable of Ethernet from your computer’s port.
  • If you have a Wi-Fi Adapter plugged into your USB port, then internet will be disconnected after unplugging this device.
Note: This method will work for all versions of Windows.
Case 2: Disconnecting through OS (Windows settings) or software:
Windows XP:
A. Wireless Connection:
To disconnect your wireless connection in windows XP follow given steps.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Network Connections.
  • Right-click Wireless Network Connection
  • Select Disable.
B. Ethernet Connection:
To disconnect your Ethernet connection in windows XP follow given steps.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Network Connections.
  • Right-click Local Area Connection
  • Select Disable.

Windows 7 or Windows Vista:
Note: This method will work for both Window 7 and Windows Vista.
A. Wireless Connection:
To disconnect your wireless connection in windows 7 or Windows Vista follow given steps.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Network and Internet >>Network and sharing Center
  • Now look for Change adapter settings on the left side at number 3 from top.
  • Right-click Wireless Network Connection
  • Select Disable.
B. Ethernet Connection:
To disconnect your Ethernet connection in windows 7 or Windows Vista follow given steps.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Network and Internet >>Network and sharing Center
  • Now look for Change adapter settings on the left side at number 3 from top.
  • Right-click Local Area Connection
  • Select Disable.

Disconnecting in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1:
Note: This method will work for both Window 8 and Windows 8.1.

2. Ethernet Connection:

  • Now look for Change adapter settings on the left side at number 3 from top.
  • Right-click Local Area Connection
  • Select Disable.

To use or enable internet, select enable from the same menu where you disabled it.
